Futon Or Sofa Bed: What’s Right For You?

If you need to add a couch that has a sleeper to your living room, guest room or bedroom, you may be deciding between a futon and a sofa bed. There are positives and negatives associated with each. Read on to determine whether a futon couch or a sofa bed sleeper is right for you.

Ease of Use

When it comes to what’s easier to use, a futon is the clear winner. In order to make a sleeper sofa into a bed, you need to take out the cushions and unroll the mattress that is attached to a metal frame, while turning a futon into a bed usually requires just the one step of unfolding the frame. If you don’t plan on using the bed portion of the sofa bed frequently, the additional steps may not be a deal breaker for you. However, if you will be sleeping on it every night and turning it back into a couch daily, you may save yourself time by purchasing a futon couch.

Comfort Level

Most sofa beds come with thin mattresses. Comfort is replaced with convenience as thin mattresses allow for easy fold up and insertion into the frame of the couch. This is not the optimal choice for long-term houseguests, but for the occasional night or two, may not be that bad. You can fluff up the comfort with a cozy mattress topper or plush pillows. Futons, on the other hand, are sold with customizable mattresses so that buyers can choose the one that is right for them. You can choose between a hard, soft or cushiony mattress, depending on your sleeping preferences.

When shopping, keep in mind what will be the main use for the piece. If you will predominantly sit on the futon couch or sofa bed much more than sleep on it, then the sofa bed may be a better choice. Unless you purchase additional pillows for back support on a futon, you will not experience the same comfort level as on a sofa.

A sofa bed typically wins in the looks department because you can purchase a sofa in any style or color to fit your space. Plus, when it’s folded, no one will know that the sofa is an actual sofa bed, it will look like a regular couch. Most people associate futons with college dorm rooms or a teenager’s bedroom. This may not always be the case, but it is true that standard futons do not look as luxurious as sofas. However, Sofamania may be the one exception to that rule! We sell stylish and modern futons that can rival the look of many sofa beds.

Futons typically run about 30% – 40% less than couches, especially sofa beds. If price isan issue, then purchasing a futon will be the more logical choice.

We break up this logic by offering both options at amazing prices without comprising on quality. Check out our wide variety of affordable futons and sofa beds here as low as $199 such as our Ann Modern 2 Tone Sofa Bed with free shipping!
